It’s a fun and useful activity I like to do with my kids so we always have enough hand sanitizer to go around. Forget store bought hand sanitizer (or at least we do)! With the kids we make our own and its better for skin because remember everything you put on your skin gets into your blood stream. Plus the store-bought sanitizer can be full of toxic chemicals that do more harm than good to your body.
Here’s what you need:
1 oz Amber Spray Container
Grain Alcohol (190 Proof like Everclear)
Distilled Water
10 drops Essential Oil
Optional: Thickened Aloe Gel
- Add essential oil(s) to the bottle
- Add Alcohol (and aloe gel) to fill 1/4 of the bottle
- Mix/Shake
- Fill the remainder of the glass with water
- Enjoy!
Yes, people look at me crazy when I go to the store and buy the largest bottle of Everclear. I’ve finally stopped feeling the need to explain myself when I buy two or more bottles… but I digress. I’ve seen people saying to use isopropyl alcohol. But I don’t… It’s too strong in my opinion! I’ve noticed it can dry out my skin and even cause superficial burns, ow! Then your skin is damaged and more susceptible to germs. With my four-year-old, we use a smaller container and I measure out the ingredients for her so she can mix everything herself in the spray bottle. She really gets excited about it!
Essential Oils we like to use:
Lemon (kills harmful viruses and bacteria)
Fir Needle (fights sore throat and respiratory infections)
Tea Tree (antibacterial)
Orange (purifies air)
Grapefruit (antibacterial and antimicrobial)
This way I don’t get upset over the many, many times the kids lose their hand sanitizer when they go to school because we have plenty more available to make at home. Plus, the kids love making it.
